Edmonton Stock Pavillion, 1921

Before it became better known for livestock shows and agricultural events, Edmonton’s Stock Pavilion could also be turned into a pretty impressive hockey rink. This 1921 photograph captures a game underway, with spectators packed into the stands around the ice.

Built at the Edmonton Exhibition Grounds, the Stock Pavilion was one of the city’s important early gathering places, hosting everything from livestock and agricultural events to sports. It’s a great glimpse of Edmonton entertainment in the early 1920s, when a building designed for cattle could just as easily become a hockey arena.
