A glimpse of firefighting in Old Strathcona in 1920, when horse-drawn fire wagons and early motorized fire engines shared the job. This wonderful archival photograph captures the firefighters of Strathcona posing with their equipment outside the impressive brick fire hall, built in 1906.
Located just off Whyte Avenue, the Strathcona Fire Hall was an important part of the community during the neighbourhood's early years. The photograph captures a fascinating moment in the evolution of firefighting, with horses still very much part of the operation as motorized vehicles began taking over.
A terrific piece of Edmonton history, particularly for anyone with a connection to Old Strathcona.
