Built in 1894 by Robert Oschner, the Strathcona Brewing and Malting Company once stood prominently along Saskatchewan Drive, with its main entrance located near today’s lookout by Old Fort Road. The brewery extended down the hillside into the river valley, allowing it to draw water from a natural underground spring directly beneath the site.
The City of Edmonton Archives building is the last surviving remnant of the original complex. In 1923, the brewery became Northwest Brewing, later operating under the name Bohemian Maid after Calgary Brewing and Malting took control in the 1950s. Carling O’Keefe purchased the brewery in 1973, and it closed two years later.
